Here at BNP Screens & Seamless Gutters, we want to help you keep your home in the best possible condition. When it comes to keeping your home safe and comfortable, the roof is one of the most important structures, and this importance extends to the overhang, too. The underside of your roof’s overhang is known as soffit, and in this article, we’ll go over how to maintain this often-overlooked part of your home.
- Clean Your Gutters- One of the best things you can do to keep your soffit in good condition is to regularly clean your gutters. The most common source of moisture problems in soffit comes from overflowing gutters, which splash onto the soffit and cause gradual damage. Keeping your gutters free of debris will prevent this kind of overflow and reduce the associated risk of moisture damage.
- Clean Your Soffit- In addition to cleaning your gutters, you should also clean the soffit itself. For vented soffit, avoid spraying water directly onto it, and instead use compressed air to clean dirt and dust out of the cracks. For solid soffit, use a mild detergent to wipe away grime and pollutants. If you see traces of mildew or mold, apply a solution of mild detergent, water, and bleach to get rid of the issue.
- Check for Pests- Lastly, you should periodically inspect your soffit for signs of pests, including insects, rodents, and birds. These overhangs make attractive nesting grounds for a variety of critters, so keep an eye on them to ensure that no guests decide to move in.
